There are approximately 160 pure dog breeds with an infinite number of mixed breeds. There are some however that have stood out as the best choice in terms of companionship or security. And we will look at some of the breeds that Kenyan dog owners favour.
Rottweiler
The Rottweiler is a typical guard dog, ferocious and obedient. They are loyal dogs, easily trained and respond easily to training. They are not friendly and are suspicious of strangers. They can be very violent if left to themselves and that is why training is necessary at a very early stage to ensure that they can be controlled.
Bulldog
The British Bulldog is a couch-potato! He will not move unless he absolutely has to, he sleeps all day and doesn’t obey commands. He is a wonderful companion dog because he loves to cuddle with his master and just chill. If you have children, this is the dog to have.
St. Bernard
The St Bernard grows really big and can keep growing to an outstanding weight of 120kg. They originate from Switzerland and are known as search and rescue dogs specialized in avalanche rescue. The St Bernard is a gentle creature, very loyal and friendly and is usually kept as a guard dog. They are intelligent and obedient and are thus very easy to train.
Terriers
There are various types of terriers, varying from the tiny to the very large. They are generally characterised as short haired dogs and an even temperament.
They are independent thinkers, so they are not the most obedient breed. These are active, agile, athletic dogs who need daily exercise so they are a perfect jogging dog. They are not car smart, so when you are outside, it is advisable to have a leash on. They are high-energy (though not hyper) and are happiest when they have a job to do.
Beagle
The Beagle is easily recognizable as the dog used during the hunting season in England due to their very sensitive nose and tracking skills. For that reason it is advised to keep the dog on a leash when outside because they will follow scents to the end and may get lost or injured. Generally, these dogs are shy but are territorial over its family.

Chihuahua
This is an official companion dog and has very strong emotional bonds to its master and is an attention hog. It is the most difficult dog to train, with a slow adaptation of commands. The Chihuahua is a rash dog with a quick temper, so you must watch him for he can decide to take on a dog five times his size. He will be your shadow, following you everyway!
German Shepherd
The German Shepherd is the top dog in the pet world! He is an excellent guard dog, fiercely loyal to his master, absolutely fearless and doesn’t back down from a fight. This breed is the easiest to train and is deemed to be extremely intelligent due to the large number of commands he can master. He's a highly active dog who needs exercise and mental stimulation almost every day.
Poodles
For clarification, the Poodle is not a girly dog! They are loyal, proud, dignified, and extremely smart and is easily trained. A perfect companion dog, the poodle is affectionate and playful. He's highly energetic, active and is a strong swimmer and loves the water. He's highly social and loves all people indiscriminately.
Spaniel
Spaniels are intelligent and learn new commands quickly. They are attention hungry little things and don’t do well if they are left alone for a long time. An equivalent can be drawn between them and a 6 year old high on sugar! They love hanging out with the family and are very friendly to strangers.
American Eskimo
This adorable dog is a wonderful family dog. They are fiercely loyal and are naturally protective of the household. They are feisty dogs and rather independent and therefore need to be trained early for obedience to be instilled in them. They understand a wide variety of human tones and some pet owners actually believe that the dogs understand what they are saying to them. These dogs are praise hogs and live for the praise of their masters.
